Maurice de Sausmarez, a talk by Dr Rebecca Wade
10th September 2024
An invitation from Leeds Art Fund to join them for this talk by Rebecca Wade. More details and booking HERE.
In 2019 the Bridget Riley Art Foundation supported the acquisition of the archive of the artist and educator Maurice de Sausmarez (1915-69) for Special Collections at the University of Leeds. With further support from the Foundation, the collection has now been comprehensively catalogued to make the material accessible for research, teaching and broader public engagement. This event provides an opportunity to explore a selection of material from the archive related to de Sausmarez’s time in Leeds, led by Dr Rebecca Wade (Associate Curator: Special Collections).

The Auckland Project
25th September 2024
The Auckland Project was set up as a Trust over a decade ago by a local philanthropist for the regeneration of Bishop Auckland. It includes Auckland Castle; once a hunting lodge for the Prince Bishops of Durham, the first of whom was appointed by William the Conqueror to manage the English/Scottish border. These Prince Bishops were given huge powers to raise armies, mint coins and levy taxes. Castle attractions: the largest private chapel in the Kingdom; a magnificent Gothic Dining Room designed by James Wyatt (1746-1813) housing the Francisco de Zurbaran (Spanish 1587-1664) paintings of Jacob and his twelve sons; a set of rooms housing superb landscapes including a room devoted to John Constable; bedrooms which reflect the more recent bishops, one of whom played a role in the settlement of a miners’ strike. Details and booking form HERE.
