George Morland: in the margins (current exhibition)
- Date
- Wednesday 25 March - Saturday 11 July, 2015
George Morland (1763-1804) was a painter, who was hugely popular in his lifetime for his paintings of scenes involving smugglers, gypsies, pedlars soldiers, animals (he was famous for his paintings of pigs) and 'ordinary' people. Despite a dissolute lifestyle, he produced a vast quantity of work, much of which became well known through engravings. This exhibition in the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery concentrates on his depictions of marginalised people.
